A Walk With Purpose: Memoir of a Bioentrepreneur by Michael D. Becker is about his life as a cancer patient as well as his life leading up to it. In A Walk With Purpose, Michael–a successful executive in the biotechnology field–details his journey from the moment he finds a lump on his neck one day. Being from the medical field himself, he understands the seriousness of this and immediately schedules appointments with doctors. It is confirmed to be cancer of the lymph nodes as expected, and what follows are the detailed and thorough tests and biopsies to diagnose the spread of disease accurately, various treatment options such chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, etc., breaking the news to his family, friends, and co-workers, and a detailed discussion of the various procedures and treatments he undergoes in his fight against cancer. Intermittently throughout the book, Michael also talks about his younger years and his journey from a school kid to a highly successful executive in NYC with a wife and children.
This book is a medical memoir in the sense that most of the book is written about Michael’s life post-cancer. Written by a person who is familiar with the world of medicine, it is an interesting and insightful glimpse into his perspective from the other side as a patient. Michael also discusses a bit about his family life and, in particular, one of his daughters who is suffering from a mental illness and has suicidal thoughts at times. In fact, this portion of the book was the only one where I felt Michael perhaps fell short.  Overall, this is worth reading, especially for people with cancer or who have loved ones with cancer.”
